The research for this work-in-progress has involved interpersonal, academic, and reflective dimensions, building off stories, anecdotes, and vignettes of Ireland's and its people's pasts. By cross-referencing memories and oral traditions against each other and the records and texts that exist on these subjects, I am seeking to use data and content as a firm backdrop to the narrative of the family story. Thus far, this has led me throughout Ireland to archives, churches, libraries, cemeteries, hospitals, government offices, and elsewhere. I have wandered and explored the natural and social environments of the book's setting. I have conducted numerous interviews, both structured and improvised, and have spent hours upon hours digging through contemporary and historical textual sources of many origins. Research has also taken me to Arizona, California, Massachusetts, and New York in the United States and to Wales, Essex, and London in the United Kingdom. The writing continues to make great progress, and I look forward to sharing updates as soon as possible. |
